Nature Walks & Tours

On an EcoAudit nature trail, led by Rob, you can explore some of the local natural landscapes. Combining a walk through stunning scenery and knowledge about the area, I will also point out the plants and animals we encounter to show you what wildlife is around that you might often pass by or simply can't identify. This might involve a walk through the sand dunes in county Sligo or Donegal, observing the plants, birds and insects that make them their home, a walk through a woodland glen in county Leitrim with woodland animals and songbirds or a mountain hike to enjoy the fantastic scenery of the land below, along with alpine plants and upland birds.

To help you decide what kind of walk you might like to go on, I have a selection of organised walks you can choose from. I lead trips for groups and/or individuals and if you need transportation from your base I can accommodate groups of up to 4 people. I can alter the walks to meet your own abilities and interests, visiting locations with the minimum of walking effort if you prefer.

Visit the Nature Walks & Tours page for organised  walks you can choose from. Please contact me for further information by phone or e-mail.

Alternatively, I can tailor my services to suit your wishes for a personalised journey or escape into nature, whether you have somewhere specific in mind that you would like to visit, a particular species of animal or plant that you want to see, or for me to create a walk for you. Please feel free to contact me with any ideas and suggestions.

Birdwatching Trips

With years of experience in birdwatching, I can provide guided field trips to help you with bird identification or to take you to find species you would like to see in the area. Maybe you would like to improve your ID skills with birds such as waders or gulls for example, or just to learn the songs and calls of our garden and woodland birds. Whatever your level of interest and skill, there will be something to suit you, even if you havenít picked up a pair of binoculars before!

There are some excellent places to go birdwatching in the different types of habitat found in the region;

  • Coasts. Cliffs in summer are host to breeding seabirds including Fulmars and Kittiwakes. Sandwich and Arctic Terns also breed along the coast in the summer. In winter, waders and gulls are common along shorelines and estuaries with flocks of Barnacle and Brent Geese. Choughs, a red-billed crow, often feed in coastal grassland.
  • Mountains. Home to the Irish Red Grouse, Peregrine Falcon, Hen Harrier, Merlin and Golden Plover; species which all breed on the uplands of the northwest.
  • Freshwater Loughs & Rivers. Breeding birds include Red-breasted Merganser, Common Sandpiper, Kingfisher, Common Tern and Great-crested Grebe. The majestic Whooper Swan arrives in Ireland for the winter, with Teal, Wigeon, Goldeneye and occasionally Pintail.

Butterfly & Moth Events

If you have an interest in the insect world, I run guided events for you to discover and learn about these marvelous creatures found on our doorstep in the North West. Iíll provide all the necessary equipment to observe or catch them for a close up look and identification.

During the summer months, when insects are at their busiest, I offer the following activities;

  • Come on a butterfly hunt with me to find whatís about, learning whoís who and enjoy the scenery!
  • Visit some local rivers, lakes or mountain pools to seek out spectacular dragonflies and damselflies.
  • Catch up with our fantastic moths by using a light trap overnight to attract them for us to observe. Many people might see moths as boring and difficult to identify but I can guarantee that you will be amazed by the sheer variety of size and colour of Irelandís moths. Some species are day-flying and can be easily found while searching for butterflies.

If you are interested in learning more, or perhaps would like to arrange an event, get in touch for more details.
